We recently had NY Artist Cary Leibowitz at KU as a visiting artist. He made 2 color intaglio prints and had over 200 mugs made to give away at his lecture. It was great fun and Cary was just an absolute delight to be around and work with on the print project!

Hey Outlaw Friends! I am at Shapco right now, doing the press check for my catalog. It is really cool to see the giant offset litho presses in action! Its like black magic, I tell you...they just press buttons and make the image more blue and whatnot. Technology, damn. The book should be done for my opening at U of Arizona Museum of Art on September 18th in Tucson....

On Sunday (as part of the Liberty Parade) I was asked to ride on the float for the A project. Although artists in town know about this, most people were just confused, especially when I hurled Swedish Fish and Hot Tamales at them (I stopped doing this after deciding it was kind of mean). There has been all kinds of resistance to the RNC, and the creative part of that has been really fun!

What happened in Texas

First off the Amazing Hancock Brothers are running the world from various headquarters spread between Temple and Austin. They managed to put together with the help of Joseph and Miss Katy Seals a very fine print fair in the heart of Austin Texas at the Creative Workers Union. The event put together by these Texan Gods was called "Ink Slingers Ball" ....it was a ball...two of'em.

I managed to whip up a show at Lombardi Gallery for part of the crew which was okay but lacked the flavor and energy of the ISB.... but with the help of John and Katy everything got "well hung"...like a donkey

This is a long overdue post – I was luck enough to have the Drive By crew come through Kansas City and invite the family for a behind the scenes backstage tour of their operation. Greg and Joseph were on tour with Spoon and the Walkmen (we are big fans of the Walkmen).. There operation is pretty incredible, it is quite a treat to see the ancient technique of woodcut printing plopped down in the middle of a 21st century rock concert. And people were clamoring for the woody goodies! These are a few of the photos from that night of fun in KC. Thanks Joseph & Greg – Safe Travels were ever you are!

Syracuse University Visit

Dusty and the print department out at Syracuse University were nice enough to have me out for a visit. We did steamroller prints the first day ( the students did an awesome job both helping out and their blocks!), built a tree sculpture (prototype for an upcoming show) that night and finished the tree the next morning. That evening Dusty arranged an awesome BBQ! and reception for the steamroller prints and some of my art garbage. AND CHRIS JOHANSON WAS THERE!!! Here a link to more pics.

Beatrix*Jar rocked it with their circuit bending magic and Christa Dalien stole the show, selling EVERYTHING! (At least Krueger and I can claim her as our student, but still....)

We made it back from New York just in time to welcome Mr. Fred Stonehouse into our midst and spend a full blown weekend making some killer prints - 4 editions in all. The biggie was "Song of Babylon" - three litho runs and two collagraph plates. Ashley and Anna present color #2 and then the secret stencil technique. It was a super time to say the least!

We had a great time with Mr. Krueger during Halloween Week. People absolutely loved his talk and critiques and the squirrel costume!

I dressed as a KGB agent, with my fine colleague, Paula Marty as Anna Nicole Smith. Don't we make a great pair? The students worked hard on his Schnauzer print: Rebekah, Elly and Josh doing blend-roll moths.

I just got back from a fun filled trip to the Impact Print Conference in Tallinn. It was very inspiring!

Many Outlaws and friends gathered to celebrate. It was great to see Outlaws representing in the Triennial. Barnes got a key to the city and the Time Machine portfolio (organized by Ruthann Godollei) got a nice reception and display as well- featuring work by Krueger, Barnes, Hitchcock, Schmid, Hosford, Dooley and others. Our recent visit by the Drive by Press crew, Joseph & Greg was fantastic. I recommend booking them into your school if you get the chance. They got all our printmakers fired up about all the possibilities of printmaking and inspired some freshman to get involved. Their lectures are great and they have so many, many prints to share.. It’s really something. Greg's talk about the history of printmaking was superb.. And Joseph's enthusiasm for sharing other people’s prints is so genuine and wonderful.

old news from our art show this august in wichita falls.....it was hot and i forgot the exact date and our record keeping and archives dept. is broken and no one speaks english.
below is a credible review from a freelance music guy that witnessed this debacle and drank our beer.

my account reads below and to the best of my knowledge is the truth more or less...

death, destruction, and the process of making art is my shepherd and i shall not want."day of the chicken show" went well as can be expected in wichita falls a cultural sinkhole even by amazing hancock bros. standards(low).

we, came, we saw, we drank'd sum beer, show'd some art and we got the fuck out of town. teaming up with okie
printmaker deluxe big john hitchcock we plyed our trade at "gilrose studio"( run by bc gilbert and cat prose). trying to carve a niche in conservative wichita falls is a mighty tall order, but these folks are trying and we were willing to help em in their noble cause.

the downtown where gilrose is located is pretty desolate. lots of vacant building for sale, or lease or rent.....this city floating in amber waves of grain in the middle of tractor country has seen better days. a goodly sized homeless population wanders about amidst the numerous churches,and SUV dealerships.
but like most places on planet earth there are signs of an underground current of art, music, and writing... hanging out a little you could see the clues - a lone skateboarder wiping out under the street light around midnight, graffiti, a tattered band flyer.... and the gilrose studio near the railroad tracks.

on the way to the opening from the nearby crescent hotel(cable tv and air-conditioning) bro. john took a picture of a human turd near a bus stop. in amazing hancock brother's legend and lore this is a good omen.

mucho lots of people were there when we entered and we commenced to drinking(keg of shiner bock) and doing the artist shuck and jive....making some dinero from some of our cash and carry cheapies.......by 9pm we were sufficiently lubricated to deliver spoken word infomercial performance art with john hitchcock ably backing us up on death metal/avant jazz guitar. we gave em both barrels and managed to clear most of the faint of heart from the gallery......only the true believers remained........many are called few are chosen........the night we had worked toward all summer was now sputtering away as the keg level lowered.....we adjourned to the outside sidewalk around 11:30pm where it was cooler and drank the rest of the shiner. the weird kid from east texas produced some bud to smoke( i declined as i only stick to booze and prescription pharmaceuticals).....bc a redneck hipster his boots and socks laying on the sidewalk pronounced the event a sucess......the waning moon stared down from a skein of hazy clouds above the bank with the time and temp as we headed back to the hotel. i woke up without a hangover and we left jesus town after cat prose fed us a fine frittata for breakfast.

Greeting all, me and unkle chuk had a bunch of shows this summer, dallas, whiskeytall falls, tx and not to mention the flatulent city. i reckon we been busy. in at least one show we managed to offend and drive folks off, the guy in the wheel chair stuck around though.

People keep asking me what I did this summer. This pretty much sums it up and should be the answer for the next coupla years, as I am deep into a giant project of 26" x 90" four color lithos on inkjet photos....

here's a few pix of our snake wrangling adventure in South Africa at the Oppikoppi music festival. Our best friend was the dude in red. Thanks to all who kicked in work for the snake--we had over 40 artists, 101 different images, and ended up with over a thousand scales all sewn together. We went through hell to produce this thing, and a couple people at the festival were actually sober enough to notice it. They hung the banner we made on some scaffolding, protected by BARBED WIRE. That's some SA style art hangin. See y'all in November!

The Lithography Gene

I recently discovered that my people were lithographers- my Great Uncles worked printing beer labels and other ads on litho stones in New York City. (Ah, beer and litho- two of my favorites). I just found the address of their old place near Soho and I look forward to checking it out at some point: Trautmann, Bailey & Blampey, N.Y. at 15 Laight Street.
I also believe that Simon Schmid invented lithography, NOT Senefelder (that liar). Look for a campaign in the near future to right this historical wrong.

This is just what I've always wanted! For all of you litho history buffs, I just found a long sought after copy of Michael Twyman's Lithography 1800 - 1850. It has some very nifty facts about the early days, and cool images of the old ways.

I guess they are getting rid of duralar wet media because of toxicity reasons. This is good for the world, but bad for those of us who like subtle photo-litho washes. It could be the end of my career....at least gocco has been saved!

Other good news: If you got the latest catalog from the davidson galleries
you will see the work of cap'n ink and dzeny. If you are out in Seattle, this is a must-visit, with drawers full old and new prints by Artemio Rodriguez, Goya, Kollowitz and other Outlaws past and present.

Prints from Belgium...

The first installment of the prints from Belgium! These 4 prints are all ink-jet with pronto plates (4 - 5 colors). Each is an edition of 10. The scale of the notes has been increased about 4 times to create a final print that measures 12" x 9". The prints have been folded and crumpled to mimic the original notes. I will post the 4 remaining prints soon! Michael
